How to Learn Homeopathy At Home & Start Using It Today
This post contains affiliate links. Read the full disclosure here.

The use of homeopathy to treat various ailments and disease is becoming more widespread, but it’s important to be educated on how to use homeopathy so you can use it safely and effectively. Here’s how to learn homeopathy at home, even as a total beginner, and start using it today.
Confusion… mass confusion.
That is how my homeopathy journey started.
I accidentally discovered the power of those tiny little sugar pellets, but when I began to learn more, I was very overwhelmed.
When do I use 30c vs. 200c? What does 30c even mean?
Why does this bottle tell me to take half the tube of pellets, and this one tells me to take 5 pellets? Did I just overdose?
Wait, so the MORE dilute a remedy is, the stronger it is? That doesn’t even make sense.
To add to it, there is a lot of disagreement within the homeopathic community regarding the different methods of use, and navigating some of those intense debates while trying to learn was very difficult for me as a complete newbie.
But, I am not here to use my experience to scare you away from learning homeopathy.
On the contrary, I am here to bring you good news that learning homeopathy is now easier than it’s ever been, and you have a wide range of resources to help you learn and get started today without any prior experience.
So, below I’ll share the first steps to take and what resources you can use to take them, so you can build some sweet homeopathic skills and start using it right away.
How to Learn Homeopathy at Home and Start Using It Today
Learn the basics, first.
My first attempt at learning homeopathy was when I signed up for a more advanced course and missed the basics. I had no idea what anything meant and it was a really expensive course!
Because of the cost, I was determined to make it work, and I eventually piecemealed it all together after a couple months but it was an inefficient way to learn and I lost sleep due to the amount of processing my brain was trying to do as I threw in endless information bombs.
If I had understood the very basics the start of my homeopathic education journey would’ve been so much easier.
So, the first step in learning homeopathy is to understand the basics, right from the beginning. If you understand the following concepts/answers, you’ll be much better off.
What are the Basics of Homeopathy?
- What IS homeopathy? Do you know what homeopathy actually is? Many people (like my pre-homeopathy self) think it is the use of herbs, home remedies, nutrition, and other “holistic” therapies for treatment of disease, but it is actually its own system of medicine. Here’s an article to help explain more. This answer alone with help you determine if you want to pursue learning homeopathy on a deeper level.
- Who discovered homeopathy and how was it discovered?
- What is the Law of Similars (or sometimes referred to as the Principle of Similars)?
- How is a homeopathic remedy made? What kind of materials are used to make a homeopathic remedy?
- What are examples of different types of potencies and how do potencies influence choosing a remedy?
- How are homeopathic medicines different from pharmaceutical drugs?
- What is the difference between an acute and chronic condition?
- What are modalities?
- What is a proving?
- What is a Materia Medica and Repertory used for?
- What are the general guidelines for taking and administering a remedy?
- A brief introduction to “taking a case” and observing symptoms for improvement is also helpful, but you’ll really start to understand it once you start using and practicing homeopathy.
All of these concepts may not click right away. There’s probably going to be a lot of “unlearning” involved in the process. Many of us, including myself, have come to assume all medicine works in the way that pharmaceutical drugs work, but this is not the case for homeopathy.
So, give yourself grace, and your brain room to learn openly, without any pressure. Over time, the gears will turn and it will all work itself out.
How to Learn the Basics of Homeopathy
First… I do NOT recommend using Wikipedia or other mainstream internet sources for learning about homeopathy. You will find many of these resources are lacking in crucial information.
It is possible to learn with free resources on the internet, but if you have the room in your budget for an inexpensive introductory book or online course, those will be the most useful since you have all the information you need in one, well-organized place. I’ll list both below.
Free Beginner Homeopathy Resources
Joette Calabrese’s Quickstart Guide – this is how I (and many others) got started… I read and listened to everything listed in Step 1, but I found that some of the key concepts listed above were not explained, so this would need to be supplemented with another resource, such as her Gateway to Homeopathy study groups which are geared toward learning the basics.
How Do I Use Homeopathy? – Homeopathy for Mommies Podcast
Homeopathy Tutorials – Homeopathy Plus (an intro to homeopathy and 16 tutorials that cover many of the basic concepts)
Budget-Friendly Beginner Homeopathy Resources
*Remember to check your local library for any of the books listed, or buy them used.
Beginner Homeopathy Books
There are many, many options out there, but here are some I’ve seen recommended often or that I’ve personally used and learned from.
Complete Guide to Homeopathy: The Principles and Practice of Treatment
The Family Guide to Homeopathy: Symptoms and Natural Solutions
Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine
Homeopathy: Medicine of the New Man
Beginner Homeopathy Courses
Intro to Homeopathy – Paola Brown (I love this course and highly recommend it to any beginner.)
Crash Course in Homeopathy – Sue Meyers; Homeopathy for Mommies (this course covers the basics but also goes a little beyond. Pairs very well with her book Homeopathy for Mommies, which is one of the homeopathy books I use most in our household.)
Going Beyond the Basics: How to Learn More Advanced Homeopathy
Once you understand the basics, it is easier to dive deeper into the study and practice of homeopathy.
This is where you will start to see more debates as you discover all the different methods for using and treating patients (including you, family, and friends) with homeopathy for both chronic and acute conditions. The use of practical homeopathy (often referred to as Banerji or practical protocols) vs. classical homeopathy is the one debate I probably see the most.
As to who’s right and who’s wrong… my job in this blog post isn’t to give you my opinion, as I believe that is something you should form on your own.
But, I will say this: I, and many of my friends, have worked with a variety of different homeopaths over the years and there is not one homeopath that practiced the same as another. Despite these differences, all of us experienced great success (and some failures) for both acute and chronic conditions.
I encourage you to keep an open mind as you learn, be curious and ask questions, and form your own opinion after gathering more information.
Homeopathy Books
Books will always be one of the number one ways to expand your knowledge of homeopathy. A quick internet search will bring up a plethora of options, but here’s a list to get you started:
The Science of the Homeopathy by George Vithoulkas
Anything by Dr. Dorothy Shepherd, but I highly recommend Homeopathy for the First Aider (it covers more than just homeopathy for First Aid and the stories will amaze you) and have heard great things about Magic of the Minimum Dose.
Homeopathic for Children and Infants by Dana Ullman
The Complete Homeopathy Handbook by Miranda Castro
A Simple Guide to Using Homeopathic Cell Salts by Nigey Lennon and Lionel Rolfe
Teach Yourself Bach Flower Remedies by Stefan Ball (hard to find, but worth it if you can! Surprisingly my local library had it.)
The Solution: Homeoprophylaxis by Cilla Whatcott
God is a Homeopath by Christian Bocquee
A Christian’s Guide to Homeopathy by Alan Crook
Informational Websites
(There are many. Here are just a few.)
Dr. Homeo (I love this site when I’m trying to select a remedy to treat a specific condition. It was very helpful when I was treating my H. Pylori.)
Homeopathy Podcasts
Two big podcasts (with lots of episodes) for learning homeopathy are:
Sue Meyer – Homeopathy for Mommies
Joette also has a bunch of Facebook lives filled with information.

Homeopathy Study Groups
This was the primary way I learned homeopathy. While you may be able to find a study group by performing an internet search for a homeopathic study group in your area, chances are slim depending on where you live.
Instead, you can form your own group with other interested friends and family (even if it’s only two people… or even just yourself!).
Here are two well-organized and educational homeopathy study group options:
(If you are not interested in starting your own Gateway to Homeopathy Study Group, you can find one that is led by someone else (usually remotely) using this private Facebook group.)
Online Homeopathy Courses
Joette Calabrese Online Courses – primarily focused on practical (Banerji) protocols, but there is some classical education, too.
Paola Brown – there are a few online workshops geared toward specific conditions like UTIs and Strep Throat
Homeopathy for Mommies; Sue Meyer
Homeopathy and Natural Health Homeschool Curriculum
If you homeschool… or even if you don’t, this is a very effective way to learn about homeopathy and holistic health with the added benefit of your kids learning along with you.
We personally use Paola Brown’s homeopathy homeschool curriculum. The memory music alone has personally benefited our family (the kids are singing the songs all the time). I can’t tell you how many times I’ve known which remedy to give during various situations because I’ve memorized the songs.
Teach Me Health and Homeopathy by Paola Brown
Memory Work Music CD or you can purchase it digitally through iTunes by searching for Teach Me Health and Homeopathy
Another option is Joette Calabrese’s The Ultimate Cool Kid’s Guide to Homeopathycurriculum.
Monthly Memberships
These are paid, private communities led by homeopathic educators.
Mighty Members – Joette Calabrese
Member Corner – Homeopathy for Mommies; Sue Meyer
A free alternative to member corners is joining a social media group, such as a Facebook group. I really enjoyed learning from these in the past but as the years went on, I observed more debates and arguments pop up, rather than useful information. There are also censorship issues which inhibit free and open discussion.
Still, you can always do a quick search to see what comes up and join for a little bit to see if it’s worth your time.
Become a Homeopath
If you really fall head over heels in love with homeopathy, then going to school to become a homeopath is a way to learn (way) more about it and start treating clients. You can explore different schooling options using the list below:

Work with a Homeopath
Obviously… if you want to start using homeopathy to treat an acute or chronic condition, then the best way to do that is to work with a homeopath!
The biggest advantage we have in modern times is the ability to work with a homeopath remotely, because if you live in an area like I do… local homeopaths are few and far between. It is not uncommon nowadays to work with a homeopath that lives in a different state or country.
There are many ways to find a homeopath, including social referrals from friends, family members, or doctors, as well as exploring the different directories and resources below.
As always, much like finding a good doctor or practitioner (link to blog post), it’s important to ask questions and make sure you’re comfortable before signing up with a specific homeopath.
For a more in-depth blog post about finding a good homeopath, I recommend this article on Miranda Castro’s website. You can also explore the following directories:
Directories of Homeopathic Practitioners
National Center for Homeopathy – Find a Homeopath
Homeosource – Find a Homeopath
North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH) Directory
In addition, there are a couple websites where you can get help right away for an acute or chronic condition.

Combination remedies
Combination homeopathic remedies contain multiple remedies in various potencies to treat a certain ailment, set of symptoms, or condition. You’ll find them for teething, colic, insomnia, seasonal allergies, restless legs, colds and coughs, sore throats, heartburn, headaches, and more.

I have a feeling many people have used combination homeopathic remedies without even realizing it was homeopathy, especially parents who are desperate to find natural, non-toxic relief for their children.
They may get a bad rap among seasoned homeopathic practitioners and users, but I’ve watched combination remedies introduce and convince many people to use homeopathy who wouldn’t have considered using it otherwise.
There are also many people I know who have no interest in learning homeopathy on any deeper of a level, and turn to just combination remedies during short term illnesses. But, there are disadvantages to this approach, as outlined by Washington Homeopathic Products:
“For those new to homeopathy, combination remedies can be a safe, uncomplicated and quick way to try homeopathy for various complaints. Because they contain several of the remedies often used for the complaint for which you seek relief – they may work for you. But it is important to realize – no combination contains all the possible remedy options.”
So, while these might be great initially, there are benefits in taking it further and learning how to pinpoint the correct single remedy you need. There’s just nothing quite like it. In my personal experience, using a well-chosen single remedy is far more effective than using a combination of remedies.
You’re likely to find combination remedies at a local health food stores, or on online retailers/websites like Boiron (the combination remedies are usually packaged in boxes rather than tubes).
Boiron Medicine Finder App
Boiron is the brand of homeopathy I find most in local health stores, including Whole Foods. You may recognize them by their signature blue tubes for single remedies, but they offer plenty of combination remedies, too.
Boiron has an app called the Medicine Finder, or you can also access it by clicking this link to view without the app. It is very useful when you are just starting out in treating acute conditions because you simply narrow down to one or two different remedies based on symptoms using the prompts from the app.
I’m also a fan of their Easy Guide to Homeopathic Medicines. While I wouldn’t use this guide as the only resource for learning about homeopathy as a beginner, it serves as a good reference for the basics of homeopathy and teaches you how to use the remedies.
Where to Buy Homeopathic Remedies
Many local health food stores, including Whole Foods, sell homeopathic remedies. The selection is usually limited to lower potencies and only the most common remedies used.
You can also buy remedies through online retailers like the ones listed below. I caution against buying remedies on Amazon, as some people have reported they received altered or fake remedies.
Washington Homeopathic Products
But, there’s one VERY IMPORTANT thing you should know about buying homeopathic remedies…
And that is, someday, you may not be able to buy them at all.
While homeopathy continues to change the lives of many around the world, access to homeopathic medicines is becoming limited as the FDA seeks to place more and more regulations on the homeopathy industry in the United States.
This is a grave concern for anyone who uses homeopathy… from the seasoned homeopath to the mom just starting out with combination remedies. No matter how you use homeopathy, it affects us all.
If you’re here because you’ve discovered the power of homeopathy and want to keep it around for yourself and future generations, you can get involved in the fight, donate, or stay up to date by visiting the Americans for Homeopathy Choice website.
If we win this battle now, we may safeguard more than just homeopathy, because I have a feeling that other industries and products (ie. supplements, herbs, etc.) may be next…
Homeopathy Can Change Your Life
But it’s usefulness and effectiveness, especially if you want to use it in your home to treat your family, does require some work and effort in learning it at home.
Thankfully, with the resources listed in this post and the wide varieties of ways to learn, learning homeopathy is easier than it ever was before.
Just remember to start with the basics!
